How to Organize a Discussion Group

Starting a course is easy - just follow these steps:

  1. Become a Local Organizer! Start a discussion course in your community. Gather others to participate in a course at your workplace at noon, your faith or community center, or with friends at home. Be part of generating inspiring and thought-provoking dialogue about issues that matter to you and others.
  2. Reserve a space for the 1-hour introductory presentation. This is usually a brown bag lunch at work or a gathering at a convenient time at your home, center of faith, or other community space.
  3. After the date and location are set, invite others to the meeting. CEI has materials such as flyers, course descriptions and samplers that are helpful in this process.
  4. At the introductory meeting, an earth institute volunteer may be available to describe(s) the course and explain how it works. Or with the help of our Local Organizer’s Guide and course sampler, you can do this yourself. Then those who want to join the discussion group, sign up and pay you to order them a course book. The group then sets a date for the first discussion session.
  5. You can order your course books online and have them shipped to you from Portland, Oregon. When you are ordering online on the home page, under the heading AFFILIATE ORGANIZTIONS there is a drop down box for ORGANIZATIONS ON CREDIT SYSTEM. Please click on Canadian Earth Institute. We will be then credited for helping with offering the study guides. If you are faxing or mailing a book order, there is an order form to use in the Local Organizer’s guide. The study guides may take up to two weeks in shipping to you.
  6. If you have 14 or more people sign up, we recommend that you form two course groups.
  7. Community Coordinators are becoming active in other communities. Ask us.
